The following event is a part of the QC Arts Festival, an interdisciplinary, campus-wide event celebrating art, music, film, theater, and fashion. Hosted jointly by Queens College and the Kupferberg Center for the Arts, the Arts Festival highlights works by emerging artists and includes performances and exhibitions by our own students and other NYC-based creators.
According to statistics, 1 in 3 women and girls worldwide will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. That is a huge number of people, and with figures like those, it is almost certain we all know a woman who is going through abuse. This issue is so widespread, but often not discussed or brought to light. The more we acknowledge that this violence is a real, prevalent problem – both physical and emotional/psychological – and try to help, the more we empower women and begin to make a difference. Through five self-portraits, this series of photographs aims to highlight awareness, empowerment, and healing. These images were commissioned by 500px Studio in collaboration with UN Women for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, part of the United Nations’ UNiTE to End Violence Campaign.
